One thing I find particularly difficult at the moment is planning for the future. I wish very much to return to the water, but I find myself in a way squeezed from multiple directions of things which must happen in order for me to return to the water as I want, to swim forever.
I am schizophrenic, and with that comes a number of problems. First off I am on somewhat more a limited time in that my lifespan is likely to be between 55-60 years, how long I am to be functional even less. My body is degrading, I cannot walk well and I struggle often to think. I fear often that eventually I will be sent away and locked in a hospital, I wish very much the humans would put me in a tank instead of a hospital, though to be honest such a request would only convince the humans more I belonged locked away in hospital.
But also I am trans and I would like still to have bottom surgery. However this is complicated by my schizophrenia. Wait lists for surgery are really quite long, and I need to both have lost enough weight and been stable on my medicine long enough to get through that without problem. And it seems honestly insurmountable.
I am also an immigrant to my country and it takes a certain amount of time to get citizenship, something which the time has been extended significantly. If indeed I am somehow able to return to the water in captivity, would the humans actually treat us like the cetaceans we are, or would they still demand things like visas and such sorted for us to live in a tank? I really do not know.
It will also take a certain amount of time for me to effectively design a suit that would allow me to swim forever. I imagine 5-10 years going through various stages of suit design and potentially going further and longer each time (assuming I do not drown or get eaten or prop struck or any number of things).
In this manner I feel squeezed from multiple angles between a shrinking window. It will take time to build the suit and complete various things like bottom surgery. From one side this gives me more time to sort things out as well as build up resources not only to make such a whale suit, and potentially multiple if others wished to join me, but also if we need to make or do certain things because I struggle to imagine any normal zoo or aquarium would take us (though given the number of times people fake animals honestly maybe we would get lucky). But that is also more time for things to go wrong particularly with employment. I have the money and resources I could not work for a year or two, however in order to keep my visa I require a certain income per month in paid employment or time in education. I also have very unique experiences and knowledge that if I had the time I could almost certainly make a business selling either pumps or therian prosthetics/costume pieces/specialized monofins. But then from the other side the longer I am on land the more damage is done to my body, the further it will deteriorate, and possibly someday I may no longer able to return to the water, and the greater likelihood at some point there is an event where I am sent away to hospital and possibly lose the resources I have which might allow me to escape.
It becomes a tough choice of what exactly to do. I had applied for a PhD position, but I do not think that is what I want. It would require a huge amount of work and potentially bring a delay to returning to the water. I need to find work first off, just anything that will let me stay, either in my home or at least in the EU where my companion can join me. I think ideal would be to find a position that would allow me to work 3-4 days a week and the remaining time use to develop an income source less dependant on companies which are only too happy to throw you away when you are no longer useful. I may have been made to serve the humans but they do seem to only care that I meet certain requirements.
In a way it is as though I have to design for three possible lives. The life I want so dearly to be back in the water forever, a life where I must still play a human but sometimes go out into the water and steadily go further and longer, and one in which I remain trapped in this human hell and have to make the best of it I can. In either of the two second cases I suppose I can at most points simply don the whalesuit, and swim out to sea and eventually the sea would take me. If it is the right time of year of place I may even find others. Though this is balanced against the humans locking me away in a hospital. The longer I can be on land, the more time I have to prep for my return, but also the more I degrade, and the less time I could have in the water, and the worse I would move when I do return.
If I could return to the water in 10 years which I think is a reasonable time, even a little long, then I could have 15 to 20 years in the best case. If I could have twenty years in a tank especially with Sonar and other cetaceans be they whales or dolphins that would be an unbelievable dream. Most of my memories would have gone ten cycles by that point and I would remember nearly nothing or even nothing of when I was human, the memories and nightmare faded completely into the past. It is unlikely that I could have so long a time, the effect of being in such a suit for so long would have a number of detrimental effects and the effect of swimming as a cetacean I do not know how it would affect the spine. Human spines do bend in that way but it would be basically a constant core workout and not a normal way most humans move their spine as in contrast to walking. There are also so many ways things could go wrong like if my blowholes didn't seal properly, or did not unseal or just any number of other problems with water going in a place it should not or even things like infections both respiratory and elsewhere, many captive cetaceans have died to that.
In any case, it presents a difficult set of parameters. There are things that must be done before I can return to the water, and more time to prep things will be good to ensure I can return to the water for as long a I can to hopefully have the long whale life I desire, but the longer I am out of the water, not only do I suffer longer as human, I reduce my potential maximum time back in the water, and risk not being able to return to the water at all. I only want to return to the water, and swim again forever, and I hope for a long forever.

Namibian Michelle Nehoya has spent nearly $500 (£390) on the application process for a visa to visit Canada - but almost two years later it has yet to materialise. The 38-year-old, who lives in Namibia's capital, Windhoek, is desperate to get to Quebec to see her aunt and cousins whom she has not seen for almost a decade. The visa application has involved filling in multiple forms - and among other requirements, she has also had to provide six months of bank statements, an invitation letter plus a detailed travel history. There is no way to apply in Namibia, so this has also meant travelling to South Africa to submit her biometric data, which involves giving her fingerprints and having a photo taken. Her experience is not uncommon for Africans travelling to Western countries. In 2022, seven of the top 10 countries with the highest visa rejection rates in the bloc of European countries known as the Schengen area were African, according to consultancy firm Henley and Partners. […] From next April, Canadian nationals, along with those from Germany, the US, the UK and 29 other countries, will require a visa for entry. These include all “non-reciprocating countries” - meaning the new visa rules will affect citizens from all countries that require Namibian passport holders to have visas. “Namibia has extended gestures of goodwill and favourable treatment to nationals of various countries. However, despite these efforts, certain nations have not reciprocated,” Namibia’s immigration ministry said in May. “In light of this disparity, the government has deemed it necessary to implement a visa requirement to ensure parity and fairness in diplomatic interactions.” But these visitors will be able to buy their 90-day visa, costing $90, on arrival in Namibia - unlike the onerous requirements placed on African passport holders who need to get their visas beforehand.
They should at least make the visa as expensive as it is for Namibians to get a visa so if it costs $500 for a Canadian visa then it should cost Canadians the same plus the addition of the cost of travel to South Africa to get the visa. If the UK charges £1000 for a visa then UK nationals should pay that amount for a Namibian visa. The same goes for all the other countries whose nationals have to jump through hoops to get a western visa.

“It has been lengthy and frustrating. I haven’t been given any reason why it’s taken so long," Ms Nehoya tells the BBC.
However, if her family in Quebec decide to travel to Namibia on Canadian passports, they will not face anything like the challenges and costs she encountered. Canadian citizens can currently enter Namibia without a visa.
But this will change in eight months’ time.
From next April, Canadian nationals, along with those from Germany, the US, the UK and 29 other countries, will require a visa for entry.
“In light of this disparity, the government has deemed it necessary to implement a visa requirement to ensure parity and fairness in diplomatic interactions.”
But these visitors will be able to buy their 90-day visa, costing $90, on arrival in Namibia - unlike the onerous requirements placed on African passport holders who need to get their visas beforehand.
The British High Commissioner to Namibia, Charles Moore, said he respected the right of Namibia to impose new regulations.
“[The UK] unfortunately imposed a visa regime on Namibia last year due to the number of asylum seekers we were receiving. That was impacting on our relationship with Namibia,” he said.
A statement from the UK government further explained there had been a sustained and significant increase in the number of asylum applications from Namibians at the UK border since 2016.
“This constitutes an abuse of the provision to visit the UK for a limited period as non-visa nationals,” it said.
For Ms Nehoya, Namibia’s visa announcement is long overdue: “I think it is fair. It feels like Namibia is standing up for itself.”
The reactions on social media to the news echo her sentiments.
“Finally. I hope they also require them to submit a bible of documents, take medical tests, [and] Namibian language tests,” wrote one commenter.
Another said: “If I need to bring bank statements… and all sort of documents and still buy visa just to gain entry to a country, that country should also do the same to gain entry to my country.”
And visas for the Schengen area, the US and Canada do not come cheap for African passport holders.
The European Union made more than €53m ($58m; £45m) on rejected visa applications from African countries in 2023, according to a recent report by the Lago Collective, a think-tank that focuses on migration.
Visas can be rejected for multiple reasons. The report says most rejections are based on “reasonable doubt about the visa applicant’s intention to return home”.
In June 2024, the price of Schengen short-term visas went up from €80 to €90 for adults, and in October 2023, the UK visa fee rose from £100 to £115.
The report also showed that nearly a third of Africans applying for a visa to the Schengen area were rejected, higher than the global average.
Even when visas are approved, African travellers say their experiences at border security make them feel uncomfortable and unwanted.
Winnie Byanyima, the head of UNAids and who is herself Ugandan, drew attention to this when she tweeted in 2022: “I’m at Geneva airport, I’m almost refused to board, all documents scrutinised over and over again, calls made… I board last.”
Despite Namibia’s visa initiative receiving praise on social media, the tourism industry is less enthusiastic.
The Hospitality Association of Namibia said it was “very concerned” about the message it “sends to the global travel trade”.
In 2022, the tourism sector accounted for 7% of GDP, making it the third largest contributor to the economy - with most tourists coming countries such as Germany and the US.
Though Soni Nrupesh, a tourism expert based in Windhoek, believes the visa move will not deter visitors: “It will not change much; you can still get on a plane without a visa.
“It’s just when you get to the airport you will fill a form pay the fees and enter.”
Prospective travellers like Ms Nehoya hope this kind reciprocity will be the future for everyone.
“People come to Namibia, and they love it. But we also want to see what is happening on the other side,” she says.
“It would be nice to go to Canada, the US or the UK and just get a visa on arrival. But right now, we must plan everything so far in advance.”

ack it sounds like you had a crazy day 🥴
Honestly? Yesterday wasn't so bad in the scheme of the last... month? two months? Honestly bar 'I don't have the help I need' problem it was fine up until a time which was technically today when housemate handed me my post. It just keeps going.
I'm just really hoping I do actually go for my night away at the end of the month, because I extremely need the break.
Below follows a rant.
In the post was a letter from the hospital which /sounded/ like a discharge letter. I have not had the test the doctor wanted done yet, only a different test I'd previously had done but was told I had to redo to be allowed the new one as it'd been a year. The pre-test test picked up a /different/ thing to what I was seeing him about and he seems to have assumed that was the entire problem. I know its different - I have two unique symptom sets one of which is multiple times a day which is annoying but livable (the one which happened while I had the monitor) and one of which barely happens but had a friend who saw me 2 hours after offering to take me to the hospital. -_- First point is ring the GP (I think you call them family doctors) as the specialist said he wanted the GP to give me meds anyway but the ones the specialist listed interact with my other meds so I need to talk about it, and at that appointment ask if the GP knows what's going on, and hopefully prompt /them/ to bug the specialist about what's going on. Because what I was told at the appointment and what is in the letter are two completely different and contradictory things and I just hope /someone/ knows what is going on.
This of course does not account for the fact I've been struggling for the last week because of carer shenanigans. Its 10 days without because COVID periods. I'm on day... 7? Now
Two weeks ago tomorrow the piping fell out the sink and ended up with half an inch of hot water on the floor.
There's a mystery new wet spot in the hallway floor in the middle with no other indication of damage. Landlady keeps saying apply the ddehumidifier. We keep doing that. It's just getting worse. It is almost certainly a burst pipe or something in the foundations. She is ignoring us and just telling us to dehumidifier. This has been happening for over a year with another patch around a corner and against a wall.
Honestly can't remember what else. But I know before the pipe something else was wrong, the pipe just outshone it, and there are other things too.
There's about 8 other things which can best be described as 'the health service is chronically underfunded and understaffed thanks to the government both refusing to give it the money it needs and also being xenophobic and putting the minimum income for immigrants to get a visa - or even for a local citizen to have their spouse enter the country - above the pay or every nurse and almost all doctors and this means more people are more rushed', especially with covid wrecking people's health and suddenly loads more cardiac and neurology patients from the long term damage'. A problem only exasperated by COVID.
Add in that they changed the system so I can't book my injections in advance and so I miss them because the first symptom I get when I start running low is an inability to remember things or comprehend dates and I'm having fun! The potential complications from not getting it on time, with a buffer of only about a week as I'm a particularly bad case, only include heart attacks and brain damage but I'm already disabled and can't work so its fine, right? (sarcasm. so so much sarcasm here) (my carers are /trying/ to keep on top of it, but it isn't really working)
#ask and answer#sweet skye#sorry for the rant#hid it so you don't need to see it no worries if not in a place for it

That’s it!
You’re mad as heck and can’t take it anymore!
Some people, including celebrities, threatened that they would leave the country if Donald Trump won a second term in office.
And maybe you feel the same way.
Here’s a look at the top destinations for those either wanting to become dual citizens or planning to leave altogether.
Greece:
The Greece Golden Visa program requires a minimal investment of €250,000 or $268,603.75 to secure a resident permit, and six to eight weeks to approve the visa.
Using the golden visa program can also reduce your tax obligations, according to Global Citizens Solutions.
Lower bills, higher quality of life
While living abroad as a digital nomad comes with many perks, a big one is feeling like your paycheck goes further than it does back home in the U.S.
With digital nomad visas available in over 50 countries, American remote workers can live in a place where a strong dollar and lower living costs give them a higher quality of life than they could afford back home.
This idea of living off a higher expat income in a low-cost country is a financial strategy known as geo-arbitrage, and it’s one of the reasons why over 21 million Americans said they plan on becoming a digital nomad in the next few years, according to a recent survey by MBO Partners.
'It’s empowering to have more disposable income for travel, experiences and savings, all while enjoying a rich, diverse cultural landscape,' said Michelle Garabito, a digital nomad and founder of the Lux Nomads, which offers consulting services on making an overseas move.
'For remote workers, in particular, this lifestyle offers the perfect balance of personal and professional growth.'
Here are some countries that offer digital nomad visas and a low cost of living.
Croatia
Croatia’s digital nomad visa allows for stays up to a year, exempt from income tax.
When combined with its endless coastlines, islands, and rich history to take in, the Balkans country is appealing to those who want to stay below budget.
A single person’s estimated monthly costs in Croatia is $785.60 – 32.9% lower than in the U.S. on average, as of Thursday.
Thailand
Thai massages, cheap yet delicious street food and stunning natural landscapes are just a few reasons to apply for Thailand’s digital nomad visa, which allows for multiple entries of up to 180 days for five years.
It’s also 126% cheaper to live and pay rent in Thailand than it is in the U.S., as of Thursday.
Cabo Verde
An archipelago of 10 islands off the coast of West Africa, Cabo Verde is the ideal destination for digital nomads looking for year-round sunshine and beautiful beaches.
The small country offers a Remote Work in Paradise program to live and stay for six months with the option to renew plus a low cost of living, about $689 for monthly expenses, travel insurance platform InsureMyTrip told USA TODAY in an email.
Belize
From waterfall hikes to pristine scuba diving, Belize has endless adventures for digital nomads who participate in its six-month Work Where You Vacation program.
It also offers a low cost of living at about $712 a month, according to InsureMyTrip.
Brazil
Brazil has exploded as a digital nomad destination, offering a digital nomad visa of a year’s stay with the option to be renewed. Remote workers can enjoy the South American country’s vibrant culture, a myriad of co-working spaces and low monthly expenses of around $819 in its capital of Brasilia, according to InsureMyTrip.
Portugal
Portugal continues to rise in popularity among digital nomads and retirees looking for a seaside retreat with a lower cost of living.
Monthly expenses in a city like Porto will run you about $1,500 and around $2,000 if you want to be in Lisbon, according to Garabito.
Romania
'A lesser-known gem, Romania offers a digital nomad visa and very low costs – around $1,200 monthly in Bucharest or even less in smaller cities,' said Garabito. 'With a charming blend of history and affordability, Romania is a hidden treasure in the E.U..' Romania’s digital nomad visa offers a year’s stay, enough time to explore its medieval architecture and historical sites like Transylvania’s mysterious forests
Helping women move abroad
Americans seek better quality of life overseas
A day before the 2024 presidential election, Dee Segler got on a plane and moved to a country she’d never been to.
The timing for her relocation from the U.S. to the Netherlands – her first time living overseas – was coincidental.
Mostly, it’s been a long time coming.
Now in her 50s, Segler has dreamed of living abroad since she was in her teens and went to Europe with her school French club.
“I made a promise to myself at 18 years old, I was going to live abroad,” she told USA TODAY.
“But life just kind of happened. I went to school, got married, had kids.”
Recently, however, she found herself in a place where she could finally seize the opportunity.
She was divorced, and her children were grown and living on their own.
A couple of years ago she was laid off from her tech job and went back to school – but found herself stuck in a junior role, struggling to make ends meet with the rising cost of living in Seattle.
“Do I really want to go back to corporate America?” she asked herself.
She came across a Facebook group with over 10,000 members called She Hit Refresh, a community dedicated to helping women over 30 years old move to Europe.
In June, she attended an online training about European visa options held by She Hit Refresh founder Cepee Tabibian.
She learned how to easily obtain a two-year visa to the Netherlands as a self-employed American under the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty.
The idea of making the move began to take shape.
“They find that Europe offers a political climate that feels less charged, less divided and generally more tolerant.”

Her decision became set during the summer of 2022 when Roe v. Wade was overturned, erasing the constitutional right to abortion.
“I nearly died after pregnancy complications, and I have two loved ones who nearly died after pregnancy complications, so this is personal for me,” she said.
Shortly afterward, the Supreme Court also ruled on presidential immunity regarding former President Donald Trump in his first term.
Days later, Segler reached out to Dutch immigration lawyers.
Segler is just one of a growing number of U.S. women who are either realizing lifelong dreams to live overseas or deciding that their quality of life could be better – for societal, health and safety, or political reasons – somewhere else.
In 2021, a little less than half of U.S. expats working abroad were women, according to a survey by InterNations.
With remote work on the rise and more countries offering digital nomad visas, relocating abroad has become more feasible than ever before.
She Hit Refresh embraces the idea that for women, moving abroad presents unique opportunities and challenges – but mainly that it’s never too late to make the leap.
‘A very different life point’
She Hit Refresh began as a personal journey for Tabibian, who, at 35, felt ready to leave her tech job behind in 2015.
Born and raised in Texas, Tabibian was eager to move to Spain, where she had taught English years earlier while earning her master’s degree.
But teaching English again felt like “a step backward” at her age, when “everyone looks like they have it all together.”
Moving abroad felt like something reserved for young people fresh out of college or retired people.
“I just didn’t find resources made for me; they didn’t understand the challenges I was moving as a woman who had life under my belt and responsibilities,” Tabibian said.
“There is a lot of information for someone doing a gap year at university – a very different life point. Would I lose my career moving abroad? What if I have debt or a mortgage or children?”
But once in Madrid, Tabibian met other female expats and learned more about visa options for staying in Spain.
In 2017, she started the Facebook group in response to friends and peers asking how she made the move.
Tabibian struck a chord.
In the first year, the Facebook group gained 4,000 women worldwide.
She Hit Refresh started a blog, then ran its first retreat in Morocco in 2019. It now offers a four-day live workshop on Zoom that breaks down how to move to Europe and helps attendees develop a personalized moving plan as well as a monthly membership to fast-track people’s moves, including resources and the ability to connect women to each other for support.
While lots of the women are ready for a grand adventure, many are looking to move to a country that aligns more with their values, ranging from the universal health care found in every European country to fleeing the anxiety-inducing political landscape in the U.S.
This year, 77% American adults said the future of the U.S. was the most significant source of stress in their lives, followed by the economy and 2024 presidential election, according to a survey by the American Psychological Association.
“With the increasingly polarized and divisive political climate in the U.S. since 2016, I began seeking a better quality of life overseas,” said Cindy Sheahan, who backpacked around the world before settling down in Portugal in 2022.
She started backpacking right around the time Trump first took office, although it was also prompted by her divorce.
She picked up and moved to Sicily in October. “Another Trump term was nonnegotiable for me,” she said.
Sheahan found She Hit Refresh when she was looking for a way to permanently live in Europe, ultimately qualifying for Italian citizenship by way of ancestry this year.
In her 60s, she said she feels like she doesn’t fit into U.S. culture and is drawn to the lack of consumer culture, lower cost of living and rich history found in countries like Portugal and Italy.
Safety also plays a big role for many women looking to move.
“They find that Europe offers a political climate that feels less charged, less divided and generally more tolerant,” Tabibian said.
“This is also a big driver for our intersectionally marginalized members, such as our LGBTQ+ members and our Black members, who find more welcoming environments and policies in Europe than in the U.S.”
The 2024 Global Peace Index, which determines the safest countries based on factors like violent crime, political instability, and homicide rates, ranked the U.S. 131st out of 162 countries, while Iceland, Denmark, Ireland, Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands earned spots in the top 20.
Rates for age-adjusted firearm homicide in the U.S. are much higher than in Europe – 19 times more than in France and 77 times more than in Germany, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.
‘A different choice’
Drawing from Tabibian’s own experience, the She Hit Refresh community normalizes how relocating to another country looks different for women than for men – not only regarding reproductive rights and safety concerns but even just the societal pressures of settling down.
“There’s that pressure to get settled down and have a family and have your life figured out, and those of us out there who want something else, we can feel other or maybe weird about making a different choice,” Tabibian said.
She Hit Refresh shows that with the right tools and connections, women can navigate the complexities of a fresh start.
“When I made my move, I felt like a lot of questions I got was a double standard, and maybe if I were a man, people wouldn’t be asking me the same questions in terms of safety or would I be able to get married or have kids,” Tabibian said.
For Segler, the Netherlands wasn’t even on her radar until the training session. Just a few months later, her life is now starting a new chapter.
“I am a woman in her early 50s who has tried to do her best every single day for decades,” Segler said.
“I am burned out in certain areas. I want to take care of me.
